"Poetic Justice" (Character Analysis Essay)

There are many movies I have seen that have become part of my life and have strongly influenced my views, so choosing one particular character wasn’t easy for me to do. For the most part I was able to relate to or understand every feeling that character felt, whether it was happiness, sadness, pain, regret, relief, guilt, or responsibility. My first choice was to write about Tupac Shakur’s role as “Lucky” in the movie Poetic Justice. This is a movie that came out in the late 1990s. Critics of the movie said that the character of “Lucky” showed a different side of Tupac that has never been seen before by the public. In this essay I will discuss how different situations can make a person humble and bring the good out of them for the best to make wiser decisions. “Lucky” shows a great deal of growth as the movie progresses and learns to make decisions that would make life better for him and those around him, while becoming a man and learning maturity.
There’s a scene in the movie where he is listening to a song made by his cousin who was murdered and begins to cry. I almost cry every time I see this part, because I can relate to the type of pain he was feeling at that moment. Lucky and his cousin were both rappers and had dreams of making it to the big time. He loved his cousin dearly and expressed to his aunt after the death that they were more like brothers. He also convinced his aunt to let him keep his cousin’s music equipment rather than sell it. In this scene, he shows a great deal of compassion and love for his family in their time of need. This is one situation I believe made him more of a humble person and more appreciative of life. Lucky is a single parent, forced to raise his daughter on his own because the child’s mother has an addiction to drugs. There’s a scene in the movie when Lucky visits the home where his daughter lives and finds the mother in the next room with a man. He also finds a drug instrument and soon after a fight breaks out. He then leaves the house taking his daughter along with him yelling to the mother, “I told you if I caught you basing (engaging in drug activity) I was going to take Keisha (daughter) to live with me at my mother’s house.” This shows his dedication to create a positive environment for his daughter despite the fact that he doesn’t have his own place, as well as being a good parent. He takes on the responsibility of a single parent in such a noble way that he makes it evident to the viewers that he feels it’s his duty to do so.
There’s no sign of a father around in Lucky’s case, so my indications are that he was raised by a single parent. His mother is very stern and her character shows strength. I think being raised in a single parent home is what made Lucky the man he is and is the reason why it was so easy for him to take on that responsibility. Not only does he love his daughter to that extent but he also knows that if his mother did it, he can too. There’s a scene in the movie after he brings his daughter home to live with him and tells his mother about the incident that’s occurred with Keisha’s mother. He tells his mom that he wants her to stay with them for good and his mother replies, “Know you do know that she is your responsibility right, I’m done raising babies.” This statement opens Lucky’s eyes to the situation he’s in and the shoes he has to fulfill.
Lucky also has a love interest by the name of “Justice”, role played by Janet Jackson. Before meeting Justice and actually getting to know her, he seems to have a very shallow view on women, referring to them as “yams”, meaning “young Tramps”. Justice and Lucky become close ironically when it turns out that their friends were dating each other. From there on they were able to build a relationship that just fell into place. Before Lucky and Justice actually hook up, he denies having a child. After they have hooked up he decides to tell her the truth, I guess because he was able to see their relationship growing and didn’t want a lie between them. This shows that though he will continue to make mistakes, he is still capable of growing. I think the reason for him not telling the truth was the fear that she would not want anything to do with him. When she asked him why he didn’t just tell her the truth he replies, “I mean, how was I supposed to know we was going to...”
Lucky begins to see changes in his self that he believes he owes all to justice. There’s a scene towards the end of the movie where Lucky goes to visit Justice at her job. For the first time since she has met him, his finger nails are clean and he says to her, “I wonder why.” This is a sign from him showing her that she is responsible for the changes in him and that he is also grateful to have her in his life. He brings his daughter along with him to meet Justice and the two of them hit it off immediately. From then on, they live happily ever after.

Throughout the movie, Lucky goes from an angry mail carrier to a well respectful, mature, humble, and loving guy. The struggles he encountered along the way made him a better person and have taught him the true meaning of responsibility. In the end, knew how to make wise decisions and was able to see life from a different angle. He suffered a huge loss, but was able to gain a piece of mind as well as find the love of his life. He has so much more to look forward to now, like raising his daughter and living a peaceful life with his girlfriend.
